Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the workplace in ways we couldn’t have imagined just a few years ago. But not everyone is feeling the same excitement—or worry—about its impact. According to the latest LinkedIn Workforce Confidence survey, attitudes about AI vary widely across age groups, from cautious optimism to outright skepticism. Here’s how employees from different generations view AI and its role in their careers.
Gen Z: Curious But Unsure
Gen Z workers, often seen as the tech-savvy generation, are surprisingly skeptical about AI’s potential impact. In fact, 40% of them doubt it will change their jobs in a big way. While many have grown up with tech, they may not yet see how AI tools can enhance entry-level roles.
Jeff Naugle, Co-Founder of Catalyst Career Group, explains:
“Gen Z workers are still finding their footing in the professional world. They’ve seen tech advancements like social media shape their personal lives, but they may not fully understand how AI applies to their work yet.”
Only 39% of Gen Z employees feel AI skills are key to career growth, putting them behind older generations in the upskilling race.
Millennials: Leading the AI Charge
Millennials, often called the “bridge” generation, are embracing AI with open arms. Over half (54%) of millennial workers believe that learning AI skills is essential for career advancement. They’re also the most proactive about upskilling.
Jeff Straub, Co-Founder of Catalyst Career Group, shares:
“Millennials see AI as a tool for growth. They’ve adapted to major workplace shifts before, like the rise of mobile tech and remote work. For them, learning AI is just the next step.”
Millennials are diving into AI applications that enhance productivity, like data analytics and project automation, making them a driving force in this transformation.
Gen X: The Strategic Adopters
Gen X employees, known for their pragmatic approach, are closely following millennials in their embrace of AI. About 53% are actively learning AI skills to stay competitive in mid- to senior-level roles.
“Gen X workers are looking at AI as a strategic tool,” says Naugle. “They’ve been through multiple technological revolutions and understand that staying relevant means continuously adapting.”
This generation is particularly interested in using AI to streamline operations and inform business strategy.
Baby Boomers: Cautious Yet Engaged
Baby boomers are more cautious about AI, with 36% expressing doubts about its impact. However, nearly half (45%) are still exploring AI skill development. For many in this group, it’s about striking a balance between leveraging new technologies and relying on their deep industry experience.
“Boomers bring a wealth of knowledge to the table,” adds Straub. “For them, it’s about integrating AI without losing the human touch in their work.”
The Generational Common Ground
Despite differences, one thing unites all generations: curiosity about AI. More than half of U.S. workers believe that gaining AI skills will boost their careers. Yet, there’s still hesitation among certain groups, showing a need for education and clarity about AI’s benefits.
What Workers Are Learning
From coding basics to understanding machine learning algorithms, employees are tackling AI in various ways. Here are some popular focus areas:
- AI Literacy: Understanding how AI works and where it applies.
- Tool Proficiency: Using AI software for tasks like customer service or project management.
- Strategic Insight: Leveraging AI for decision-making and workflow optimization.
Looking Ahead
The workplace is changing fast, and AI is leading the charge. Whether it’s cautious curiosity from Gen Z or strategic adoption by Gen X, every generation has a unique perspective. Employers have a golden opportunity to support their teams by offering targeted upskilling programs and showcasing AI’s practical benefits.
“AI is a tool, not a replacement,” Naugle concludes. “The companies that help their employees adapt will have a stronger, more innovative workforce in the years ahead.”
